FROM VANHUI TO TATUNG

photo series, typography, edition of dining set of tableware produced with Tatung Taipei

A new font was created based on the advertising light of Vietnamese restaurant (random choice) in Nice. The restaurant’s name Van Hui was written in a typography that resembles brush strokes of Chinese characters.
A set of Chinese tableware (a bowl, a plate, a spoon) was produced with the Tatung company in Taipei as the annual edition for Museum of Contemporary Art Leipzig with the artist’s name/signature and year written in that new typography. Tatung China produced at that time most of the tableware for Chinese restaurants in Europe. This set (bowl, plate, spoon) was their standard set; normally they came in a colourful ‘Chinese’ decor.
*The Vietnamese Restaurant was near by the Villa Arson in Nice (Fr), where I was staying for a residency in 2001.
