BERN NEONLIGHT

four neon light signs (red and white neons) | approx. 3.5m x 1.5m each | Weichenbauhalle, Von-Roll Areal, University of Bern, Bern (CH)

Permanent installation at the University of Bern, Switzerland.

The University of Bern’s two new lecture buildings are constructed in an old tramway factory building (from 1916) – the historic façade is used like a shell. The former tramway factory hall becomes the ‘outside’ of the two new buildings. This relationship of outside – inside, public – private was the starting point for the neon work: four neon signs that resemble advertising lights; using the language of urban, public spaces; creating a ‘street’, a ‘square’ between the two new lecture buildings inside the former tramway factory.
